Our primary goal is to provide a nurturing, RESPECTFUL, and enriching environment. We focus on developmental areas of infants
(0 to 2 years old) and toddlers (2 to 4 years old). Pixie Nursery School pays close attention to gross motor development, fine motor development or manipulation, and language skills. Infants and toddlers are never rushed into doing what they are unable to do. We honor and respect each developmental stage for each child. Our approach is more innovative than other Early Childhood Programs practiced in schools throughout the country. Each day is calm and relaxed, with no classroom set-up like in most schools. We encourage children to do whatever they can naturally on their own. Our work is inspired by Magda Gerber, as well as Rudolf Steiner, creator of the Waldorf School. Pixie Nursery School shares the common vision that the art of education provides the means to grow, learn, and strengthen the soul. We honor every child as one-of-a-kind and special.
At Pixie Nursery School children are encouraged to spend 4 hours daily of outdoor play. Why? Playing outdoors gives children an opportunity to learn about nature and promote all areas of development. Thinking, feeling, and being open to learning are basic concepts a child develops during free play activities. Nature provides unparalleled benefits. From childhood through adulthood, we are all fascinated by listening to birds, watching the movements of flies, butterflies, shadows, and leaves. Air circulation, temperature changes, and the playfulness of sun spots and shade are stimuli to the skin, eyes, lungs, and metabolism. This supports gross motor coordination and overall development. We are always amazed to witness infants and toddlers eat better, sleep better, play better, and are more confident being on their own when offered the freedom of movement and of playing uninterruptedly outdoors. Playing is natural to all children and being outdoors breathing fresh air supports strong, heathy bodies.
Miss Jocelyn Kids brings mindfulness and yoga to schools through classes incorporating live music perfomance. Children learn yoga poses, breathing and relaxation techniques, plus mindfulness exercises. They also learn how to cultivate loving-awareness and compassion for one another. Yoga helps children improve focus and concentration, gain confidence, and learn how to express themselves. Pixie Nursery School strongly believes that body awareness is critical to building self-respect and confidence. We proudly offer 1 yoga class per week and all children are encouraged to participate while building their best yoga pose. Follow Wee Yogis on Instagram @weeyogis
Capoeira for Preschoolers
Class length: 30-45 minutes Description:
Capoeira is a unique martial art that offers countless benefits to young children with respect to both physical and mental development. By incorporating body movement, percussion, music and singing, Capoeira helps develop balance, coordination, fitness, flexibility, and rhythm. Capoeira also builds social skills, a sense of community and self esteem through creative expression. Our classes are offered in Portuguese at Pixie Nursery School to support language development in young children. Fostering a love of reading is essential for a well-rounded education. Pixie Nursery School's staff always reads hundreds of works of classic and contemporary children's literature to our kids. We select books in Portuguese, English, and Spanish daily, so that children can learn new languages at an early age, skills that are invaluable as they get older.
Instead of offering a traditional school setting, Pixie Nursery School provides multiple opportunities for our children to do sensory play daily. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways. This stimulates a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, gross and fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and social interaction. It aids in developing and enhancing memory and is great for calming an anxious or frustrated child. This type of play also helps children learn basic sensory attributes (hot, cold, sticky, dry). This is why we make and bake our own bread and community soup each week. Children are encouraged to cut vegetables, then wash and place them in the pot to be cooked. They may help serve what they will eat for lunch. Sensory play opportunities contribute to children's developmental stages in a highly positive way.
